Introduction
Initially Natural Killer Cells have been regarded as a uniform subset of peripheral blood lymphocytes. During the past years at least the following NK cell subsets have been described.
- CD56dimCD3- NK cells
- CD56brightCD3- NK cells
- CD56-CD161+CD3- NK cells
- CD56-CD16+ NK cells
- Mavilio et al., PNAS 2005, PMID: 15699323
- NK helper cells CD56(+)/CD83(+)/CCR7(+)/CD25(+)
- decidual NK cells
- murine B220+CD11c+NK1.1+ cells
- Blasius AL et al., J Exp Med. 2007 Oct 8;. Epub, PMID:17923504
- additional subsets with significant overlap with each other
- CD56+CD3-CD8- NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD8+ NK cells
- Addison et al., 2005 [1]
- CD56+CD3-CD25+ activated NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD25- non-activated NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD69+ activated NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD69- non-activated NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD94+ NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD94- NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD57- non-exhausted NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD57+ exhausted NK cells
- CD56+CD3-CD16- non-ADCC NKs
- CD56+CD3-CD16+ regular NKs, capable of ADCC
Leukocyte subset with at least partial overlap with NK receptors:
- CD56+CD3+ NKT cells
- CD56+CD3+TCRa/b-TCRg/d+ NKT cells
- CD56+CD3+TCRa/b+TCRg/d- NKT cells
- [iNKT]s
