Introduction

IL-2 and NK cells

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is the major cytokine used for activation of Natural Killer cells.

Gays et al. (2005, [1]) demonstrated that IL-2 (and IL-15) selectively induced the de novo expression of Ly49E on murine mature NK cells.

Chrul et al. (2006, PMID:17047292) demonstrated that stimulation of NK cells by a mixture of IL-12 and IL-18 caused a significant increase in KIR2DL1+ and KIR2DL2+ NK cells but not in KIR3DL2+ cells, while stimulation with IL-2 increased the frequency of all three subsets.

Chiossone et al. (2007, PMID:17234744 suggest a different ability of IL-15-cultured NK cells compared to IL-2-cultured NK cells to survive to steroid treatment. This may have an impact for a correct NK cells cytokine conditioning in adoptive immunotherapy.

IL-2 @ WikiPedia

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is an interleukin, a type of biological response modifier, a substance that can improve the body's natural response to disease.

IL-2 is normally produced by the body, secreted by WikiPedia:T cells, and stimulates growth and differentiation of T cell response. It can be used in immunotherapy to treat cancer. It enhances the ability of the immune system to kill tumor cells and may interfere with blood flow to the tumor.

Aldesleukin (Proleukin®, ATC code L03AC01) is WikiPedia:recombinant IL-2 used in treating WikiPedia:malignant melanoma and WikiPedia:renal cell carcinoma.
